International Organization
Definition
An organization and its subordinate bodies governed by public international law, or any other body set up by or based on agreement between countries. In privacy contexts, international organizations matter because GDPR and other laws have specific provisions for them. Under GDPR, international organizations can receive data transfers under certain conditions similar to adequacy decisions for countries. Organizations like the United Nations, World Health Organization, NATO, and international financial institutions fall into this category. International organizations often have their own data protection rules reflecting their unique status. When transferring data to international organizations, assess whether appropriate safeguards exist, review the organization's data protection framework, ensure contractual protections where needed, and document the legal basis for transfer. The unique legal status of international organizations creates special considerations in data protection frameworks.
