Offer Wall
Definition
An offer wall is a monetization feature commonly used in mobile apps and websites that displays third-party advertisements or promotional offers to users. Users can interact with these offers—such as watching videos, installing apps, completing surveys, or making purchases—in exchange for in-app rewards, virtual currency, or premium features. From a privacy perspective, offer walls raise concerns because they often involve data sharing with multiple third-party advertisers and tracking technologies. Companies using offer walls must disclose this data sharing in their privacy policies, ensure proper consent mechanisms are in place, and comply with advertising regulations. Under COPPA, offer walls in child-directed apps require special attention, as they cannot condition access to the app on unnecessary data collection. The GDPR requires that any data processing through offer walls must have a lawful basis, and users must be informed about what data is shared with offer wall providers and for what purposes.
